Children's Educational Programs

Guardians of Surf and ShoalIn addition to a full range of on-going programs, the Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum offers two-hour hands-on education programs for children ages 6 to 10. Each program costs $25 per child, $12.50 per child for members. Space is limited. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the museum at (508) 228-1885.

Shore Lights: Lighthouses of
Nantucket and the North Atlantic
Guardians of Surf

Explore the museum’s extensive collection of artifacts from Nantucket’s lighthouses. Listen to the history, stories, and adventures of the people and families (including children and pets!) who lived and worked in these coastal guardians. Children will participate in lighthouse-related activities including creating and taking home a lighthouse model and a shadow box. Additionaly, children will take on the roles of the lifesavers as part of the live breeches buoy demonstration.

Lifesaving Practices

Bold and the Brave

Children will explore the museum’s lifesaving artifacts, including breeches buoy rescue equipment and a breeches-buoy rescue demonstration. Participants will hear about notorious shipwrecks, observe surfboats that participated in rescues, and learn about the significant role of lightships in lifesaving efforts. They will hear the story of Marshall the dog, a Newfoundland, who was rescued from the W.F. Marshall, and create
an original nautical
shadow-box.
